Every now and then its good to try something that is unfamiliar and different, I think it stretches us creatively. I prefer to work with available light, but this weekend I had the chance to try my hand at working with strobes on a couple of my friends' cars. This look is pretty much exactly what I had mind before the shoot, so I'm pretty pleased that with my lack of experience with lights, I was able to achieve what I wanted.
I had originally wanted to use 4 lights (I would have put the 4th back right for a little rim light), but I couldn't get the 4th to fire using the optical trigger, and I didn't have enough radio transmitters to go around. So I settled for 3. You can see the set up below. There is an additional bare strobe behind the car pointed at the wall and turned down to 1/32 power. The other two were at full power.
I took some detail shots as well, but most of them didn't really turn out. It was late and we were hungry, so we called it a night. More learning for next time!
